We must note that most scroll compressors are more for labs or dental offices than in your garage. These machines are the most expensive, especially at traditionally lower horsepower, and require the most attention to detail during manufacturing.
Unless you need the highest quality air from the quietest machines on the market, consider other compressor options. With a scroll, you are paying for all of the features and benefits that make these compressors unique and more expensive than piston or rotary screw compressors of the same size.
What makes scroll compressors unique is their compression mechanism. They consist of two independent scrolls, one fixed in place and one orbiting the fixed scroll. The orbiting scroll gets so close to the fixed one that it looks like they are making contact, but in reality, there is a fraction of space between them.
The costs of these compressors are higher than expected due to the manufacturing nature of the components. The manufacturing process requires intense attention to detail, or the components will malfunction. The repair for these types of compressors will cost you a lot for the same reason.

Before buying a scroll, you should understand how these machines function to determine if they best fit your needs. Someone may have said that you have to have a scroll because they haven’t had any issues, which is fantastic for them, but it might not be what your system needs. Due to their mechanical nature, Scroll Compressors excel in clean and quiet environments.
The movement of the parts creates suction and pulls the air in until the front of the scroll comes as close to contact as possible, to the point where it looks like the pieces are in contact with each other, sealing the pocket. Rotations continue, and the pocket size decreases until it reaches the discharge port in the center. Multiple air pockets are compressed and released in rapid succession by continuously moving.
To keep things short and sweet, the benefits of the scroll air compressor are:
Scroll compressors are inherently more efficient than their industry counterparts for many reasons. A multitude of reasons enhances the efficiency of scroll compressors in ways that are not feasible for pistons or rotary screws. Scrolls compress air when powered on, achieving 100% volumetric efficiency. In other words, when the compressor is on, it constantly compresses the air, unlike piston compressors that need to rest and have a 50% volumetric efficiency or lower.
Due to 100% volumetric efficiency and fewer opportunities to lose air, scroll compressors have fewer moving parts and a considerably quieter base operational volume. They can operate 5-15 dBA below typical air compressors. Alongside the obvious, fewer moving parts, lower volume, and less friction mean your compressor will be more durable.
Applications that need high-quality air need scroll air compressors to achieve the highest quality air with the least amount of additional work. Oil-free applications thrive from scroll air compressors, as they do not add oil to the air during compression.
The scroll is suited to more minor operations requiring lower air volumes. Due to the nature of the scroll component, you can only go so large without losing pressure and compression efficiency. Instead, bigger units will have multiple scroll pumps included.
Save your wallet and yourself from extra stress by getting the best fit for your system and not the first recommendation that you find. It will take a little more time initially, but it will save you lots of headaches and frustration over the long run.
