Including a pressure flow controller (PFC) is a secret method of saving on compressed air energy costs. These controllers balance the fluctuating compressed air variables. By balancing these finicky variables, pressure flow controllers can massively improve the efficiency of your compressed air system.
The system responds to usage fluctuations by automatically increasing or decreasing the size of the PFC’s flow control valve orifice. The PFC precisely regulates the low-side compressed system pressure to a field-adjustable set pressure, which supplies a constant low-side pressure within 1 to 2 PSIG of your set point.
Flow controllers present several significant energy savings and operating benefits, especially in older, existing plants without budgets for major compressed air system re-designs. System capacity has often yet to be well-matched to production demands, leaving ample opportunity to capitalize on these savings.
PFC automatically allows for periods of stored higher-pressure compressed air from the upstream receiver tank(s), which averages out compressed air usage. It enables the compressed air system to be operated with minimal wasted compressor HP, allowing the compressor to no longer provide maximum flow at peak usage periods but maintain flow equal to average usage.
The systems require only a single control valve and single pressure input signal and come complete with a pilot air filter, pressure gauges, drain port, bypass piping, and valves for installation in either new or existing systems.
Pressure-flow control should be included in the evaluation process as a means to:
Flow controllers separate the supply side from the distribution system. They create “real” storage within the receiver tank by accumulating compressed air without delivering it downstream. By eliminating artificial demand and substantially reducing leakage, total air consumption is reduced. Stored compressed air can satisfy demand spikes without a pressure drop or requiring stand-by compressors to engage.
A flow controller can hold demand-side pressure at the setpoint with an adequate air supply, storage, and piping. They can be easily installed in new or existing compressed air systems.
