A process chiller is a thermal device that removes heat generated by a given process. This cooling equipment repeatedly conducts chilled water through a closed-loop to allow a drop in rising process temperatures.

When dealing with industrial manufacturing and processing, temperature is an extremely crucial variable that can ruin your production process. If the compressed air temperature gets too high, the total volume of air being compressed decreases, resulting in less compressed air available at the point of use.
Heat causes air molecules to spread out, even when compressed. When heat works against the forces of compression, it reduces the efficacy of the compression process, uses more energy to compress the same amount of air, and increases the volume of condensate present. In short, when the heat of your compressed air increases, your production suffers.
The best way to combat temperature is to cool the compressed air before it reaches your dryer and filtration system. This cooling can be done directly in the air or through chilled water.
Process chillers, also known as chillers or process cooling chillers, are thermal devices that remove heat from processes using mechanical refrigeration. They are often used in industrial settings to help equipment last longer and can be preferred over HVACs when direct process cooling is needed.
Chilled water is often a requirement in industry. Whether keeping a mold from overheating in a plastic-injected manufacturing operation, ensuring ingredients don’t spoil during food production, or ensuring critical medical equipment is kept online, process chillers are at the heart of many operations. If the chiller goes down, the whole process often shuts down. Therefore, the chiller shouldn’t be seen as an afterthought but as a vital tool at the heart of your company.
Process Chillers come in two different options:
This equipment uses ambient air to cool the refrigerant. It is prominent in food processing and plastics to maintain product temperature. Many maintenance personnel prefer air-cooled chillers because they are stand-alone units that do not require any additional equipment to function.
Industrial water chillers require a separate cooling tower to remove heat from the refrigerant. Even with the cooling tower, water-cooled units take up less space than air-cooled chillers. But they do need a sizable water-filled tower that requires a continual water source, which wastes water. This can be a detriment, especially in areas with water restrictions.
