Check Valves

Air check valves allow air to flow in one direction and prevent any flow in the reverse direction. They are widely used in air compressors, pneumatic, and vacuum systems.

Air Check Valves For Compressed Air

An air check valve allows airflow in a singular direction to keep the air moving forward and prevent backflow. Industrial air compressors are the most common application of these valves.

The valve enables air to flow into the storage tank from the compression chamber without backflow disrupting the process. Controlling airflow keeps specific areas pressurized and others depressurized. These miniature valves have a crucial role in the health of your system.

Primary Roles of Check Valves

Check valves allow compressed air to flow from the compressor pump to the compressed air storage tank while simultaneously preventing it from backtracking. These valves can be located on your compressor, air tank, or air pipes—basically anything pressurized.

  • Preventing Backflow
    • The check valve protects your equipment from backflow damage. If compressed air can return to the pump, it will damage the equipment or cause mechanical stress. The pumps are designed to have air flowing in one direction.
  • Air Tank Pressure
    • By preventing backflow, these valves are crucial for maintaining pressure in the compressed air tank. The valve ensures that your stored air is staying at the desired pressure. Without a valve, the air has the potential to return to the pump, disrupting the compression process and ruining the pressure in your tank.
  • Energy Efficiency
    • Efforts to maintain pressure in the tank and compression chamber benefit your energy efficiency by minimizing excess movement and maintaining pressure in the tank. This ensures that the work done by the compressor isn’t lost, maintaining pressure instead of having to make up for lost pressure.
  • Unloader Valve Interaction
    • Most times, the check valve works in tandem with the unloader valve. The unloader valve releases pressure from the compressor head and the airline, leading to the check valve. The check valve works with this valve to unload the excess pressure without affecting the storage pressure.
  • Moisture and Debris
    • The valve ensures one-way flow and prevents moisture and debris from traveling backward through the pump. Moisture and debris in your compressor pump result in corrosion, wear, and operational issues.

Getting Your Check Valve

Just as you must with all compressed air equipment, ensure your check valve is sized accordingly. A check valve is useless if it isn’t sized correctly. It won’t be able to maintain pressure levels or keep the air where it is supposed to be.

As long as the equipment is lined up correctly, you should have improved peace of mind. Having a Check Valve keeps your pressure in check and your air where it should be. You are better off having a check valve in place than nothing at all.
