Belts are responsible for operating the pistons or rotors. As the motor turns, the belt transfers power from the motor to the air end. Without these belts in place, there is no compression.

Belts are a major component of a healthy air compressor. They are used in tandem with a pulley system to power the air end. The belt is attached to the motor and to the air pump. As the motor runs, the belt moves with it and transfers the energy to the air end, using the pulley as a medium. The size of the pulley determines the air compressor’s maximum pressure (PSI) and airflow capacity (CFM).
A belt-driven air compressor offers several advantages, one of which is flexibility. The CFM and PSI can be adjusted depending on the situation. By changing the configuration of the belt and pulley, you can set the pressure ratio that impacts the PSI and CFM of your compressed air. These adjustments can increase or decrease pressure, thus affecting the speed or CFM.
When pressure is increased, the CFM lowers, and vice versa. So you can get more CFM by lowering the pressure, or you can have more PSI at a lower operating CFM. You can reduce the PSI to increase your CFM when you need more airflow. And when you need more pressure, up the PSI at the cost of CFM.
This flexibility is crucial in operations like woodworking or auto shops, where different processes require different pressures and airflow. This flexibility allows you to use one compressor for multiple applications.
The main issue with Belt-Driven Compressors is the maintenance required. Even though the belts are simple and easy to maintain, they require frequent maintenance and upkeep. Unfortunately, belts wear out over time and will need replacing. They can become “shiny,” cracked, stretched out, and hardened, which means it’s time for a replacement.
Belts require frequent checks to ensure quality and state. Not only are you checking on the state of the belt but also the alignment and tension. If the belt is out of alignment, the compressor will operate outside expectations. This can lead to unexpected air amounts and variable pressure. This is especially true in harsh environments.
The benefits and disadvantages don’t matter when you already have a belt-driven unit. If you are just trying to find a suitable replacement for your belt, you’ve come to the right spot.
