A water separator, often called a moisture trap, is designed to eliminate liquid water from compressed air lines. It employs impingement baffles, wire mesh, cyclonic devices, or filter elements. These components compel the liquid to descend to a lower point in the container, separating it from the compressed air.

Contaminated air can cause a problem in every compressed air application as it can deteriorate the system from the inside, increase the necessity of maintenance, and shorten the lifespan of your equipment. Still, it can be the difference between production and completely shut down in applications requiring clean air. Industries based around human consumption, food, breathing air, and pharmaceuticals are just a few industries highly dependent on clean air. Oil, dirt, or water getting into the product would harm the product users’ health and the production company’s reputation.
Moisture and particulates have no business in an air stream, including yours. They provide no benefit to air production or movement and do not belong at the point of use. Removing these contaminants involves two significant equipment in every air system: a dryer and filters. Including these vital pieces can prevent damage to your air system and extend the life of your compressor and equipment while avoiding wasted energy.
The size of your water separator is determined by the size and amount of moisture being removed. You want to be able to remove the particles in descending size so that you do not clog the filter elements. The bigger particles will get caught as the air passes through, and smaller and smaller particles will make it through.
Moisture will fall out of the air as it moves through your compressed air system. Pressure and temperature will drop due to the air moving through space and trying to return to equilibrium. To achieve this, the air pressure and temperature drop, causing moisture in the air to condense and fall out. This moisture will collect in your pipes or equipment if not adequately removed.
The number one enemy of your compressed air system is moisture. The best solution is to remove as much moisture as possible, and two pieces of equipment are needed. A compressed air dryer is the cream of the crop, removing moisture directly after compression. This way, the moisture can’t collect downstream and is removed before traveling to the point of use.
Say your system has a dryer, but moisture still enters your air. That is when you want to install an in-line water separator. A water separator at the farthest point from your compressor catches all accumulated moisture right before the air is used. The water separator acts as a safety net and condensate management device simultaneously.
Air Compressors benefit from water separators’ ability to remove moisture from compressed air; however, they are not the primary condensate treatment and should not be considered a primary source of moisture removal. Moisture separators can become overwhelmed easily, which is even more true when they are your sole method of condensation removal.
