Oil Water Separators For Compressed Air

Oil-water separators are an often overlooked yet crucial aspect of your compressed air system. Oil and water are two things we want to keep separate, especially if you plan to dump the excess. Properly filtered condensate can be dumped directly into your sewage system. If you don’t filter your condensate, disposing of it requires much more effort.

Because oil is lighter than water, these machines remove oil, grease, and hydrocarbons, leaving non-hazardous water safely disposed of through the discharge port. By successfully removing these contaminants, it meets the EPA requirements for dumping wastewater. However, that does not mean having one in your system automatically reaches the standards.

Science-Backed Moisture Removal

Oil water separators work through an application of Stokes’ Law. Now, what is this law? English mathematician George Stokes analyzed and described the relationship that dictates how the solid particles in a liquid will settle.

This also applies to liquids of different weights in the same space, such as oil and water. His equation can determine the velocity at which the particles rise or settle. Capitalizing on this phenomenon allows lighter fluids to be sieved off the top of the water.

The more this filter becomes saturated, the heavier it becomes and the more it starts to sink into the column. This means that the filter is constantly in contact with the surface of the water. The oil has nowhere else to go but into the filter.

Multiple Styles of Separation

As with compressors, oil-water separators can use different separation methods to remove contaminants from the condensate. Methods may vary by application, and depending on your system, this can cause different quantities of oil in the wastewater.

Four main types of oil separation are used:

  • Gravity Separation
  • Chemical Absorption
  • Non-Chemical Absorption
  • Adsorption

Gravity separation is the simplest method of separation, and as you work down the list, the process intensifies, and the PPM (parts per million) is lower. Lower PPM means you can dump the condensate directly into the sewage system.

Far and away, the most significant benefit of having an oil water separator is improved oil removal. When given enough time and space, oily wastewater will separate into two layers. Oil will float to the top due to being lighter than water, and with a simple oil skimmer, it can be removed quickly and efficiently.
